NEFAEP November Luncheon

About the Speaker:

Karen Adams, Manager of Environmental Programs

Ms. Adams focuses on the water programs at all CSX yards, with an emphasis in permitting, preparing DMRs, preparing contingency plans, and responding to regulatory agency inquires or inspection reports.

Prior to joining CSX, Karen was the EHS Manager for POET, an ethanol producer based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with manufacturing facilities in 7 States. Karen also worked at EPA and Coast Guard in Washington, DC where she wrote portions of the National Contingency Plan regulation and the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures regulations.  She started her working career cleaning up hazardous waste sites in the Superfund program and inspecting oil storage facilities.

Karen has a BS in Chemistry, a Masters in Public Administration, and a Juris Doctorate.

NEFAEP Scholarship Program

Scholarships are one way NEFAEP endeavors to help bring more professionals into the environmental field of study. Scholarships provide a means of rewarding excellence as students pursue their college careers, and many provide funds to help make the educational experience possible. They are a powerful investment in the future of a student and a community and they open the door to life-changing opportunities for deserving students.

NEFAEP will be providing up to two (2) $1,000 dollar scholarships for the winter 2016 semester! Applications will be accepted from August 1 to October 2, 2015.

CRITERIA

  • Student must be a NEFAEP member or a family member.
  • Student must submit a copy of their most recent transcript.
  • Student must express an interest in an environmental field as major program of study.
  • Student will receive additional consideration if they provide documented community service involvement in the NE Florida area.

RECOGNITION

NEFAEP will present and recognize the winners of the scholarships at our monthly meeting held in November 2015.

NEFAEP May Luncheon

Register for the NEFAEP May Networking Luncheon!

Speaker: Darrin McKeehen

Brownfields Coordinator, Florida Department of Environmental Protection

Mr. McKeehen is the DEP’s Brownfields Coordinator for the Northeast District and a professional geologist in the Waste Cleanup Section.  He has held this position since June 2008. His responsibilities include the coordination of the management and development of the state’s Brownfields Redevelopment Program with the direction of Brownfields Liaison, Kim Walker. Mr. McKeehen works closely with local governments, regional planning councils, community groups and property owners to promote and facilitate the program and associated incentives for the redevelopment of Brownfield sites. Mr. McKeehen has 27 years of professional environmental experience and has been with DEP for the past 16 years. Prior to becoming the Northeast District’s Brownfield Coordinator, he was the Drycleaner Solvent Cleanup Program Coordinator. In addition to his Brownfields responsibilities, he maintains a wide variety of Waste Cleanup projects.  Mr. McKeehen has a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Bowling Green State University.

Rhoda Shaffer Bio:

I started my career as an analytical chemist at a transfer, storage and disposal facility (TSDF) and achieved progressive expertise in a variety of environmental matters. Experience includes developing standard operating procedures, analytical report writing, project management, regulatory compliance, environmental/safety risk assessment, hazardous waste classification and safety training. Throughout my career, I have successfully utilized compliance in EPA, OSHA and DOT regulations.  

AS Chemical Technology – Mary Holmes College; BS Environmental Studies – Chadwick University; REM designation – National Registry of Environmental Professionals and numerous certifications, seminars and courses.
