Ann B. Shortelle, Ph.D. Executive Director
St. Johns River Water Management District
Dr. Ann Shortelle is the executive director of the St. Johns River Water Management District, where she began work June 1, 2015.
Dr. Shortelle has more than 25 years of professional experience in lake, riverine and reservoir management for water quantity and quality. Her experience also includes surface water/wetlands restoration, surface water modeling, permitting and environmental assessments.
She previously served as executive director for the Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD) for three years, where she had been actively involved in the North Florida Regional Water Supply Partnership and springs protection.
Prior to taking the helm at SRWMD, she was the director of the Office of Water Policy for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), where she helped develop water policy for water supply planning and alternative water supplies, minimum flows and levels, reuse, water conservation, water quality protection and consumptive use permitting. Shortelle worked as a consultant in the private sector before her employment at DEP.
Dr. Shortelle is a member of the North American Lake Management Society, the American Water Resources Association, and other professional organizations. She served on the North American Lake Management Society’s Board of Directors, and was a former two-term member of the Florida Lake Management Society Board of Directors and served on the policy advisory committee to DEP for designated use and classification refinement for surface waters. She holds a doctorate degree in limnology from the University of Notre Dame and a bachelor of science degree in biology from Mercer University. She has authored/co-authored more than 40 publications and presentations on environmental topics.

Diane Pickett, P.G.
Petroleum Restoration Program
Florida Department of Environmental Protection
Currently the Program Administrator, Diane has been involved with Florida’s Petroleum Cleanup Program since 1987 from both sides of the fence, the regulatory and engineering consultant sides. Diane has developed cost-effective and efficient assessment and workflow policies and procedures for both the state and the private sector and constantly strives for consistency from all the players in the Program. Diane has a BS in Geology from Michigan State and a Masters in Geology from Florida State.
John F. Wright, P.E.
Petroleum Restoration Program
Florida Department of Environmental Protection
Environmental Engineer with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Petroleum Restoration Program. John has been with DEP for over 29 years, has worked with Florida’s Petroleum Cleanup Program for the past twenty years, and is the Chief Engineer for the program. Other experience with DEP includes industrial wastewater permitting, compliance and rule development. John earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida in 1983. Duties with the PRP include overseeing remediation projects, reviewing performance based cleanup proposal in the Advanced Cleanup Program, developing risk based closure strategies, acting as a liaison with DOT on contamination issues, and assisting with remediation policy development.

The Environmental Protection Board is seeking nominations for their Annual Environmental Awards. There are three types of awards to be presented:
The Charles E. Bennett Champion of the Environment Award recognizes individuals who have exhibited, over a long term, professionalism, diligence, and unwavering commitment as a Champion of the Environment in protecting or preserving the natural resources of Duval County
The Christi P. Veleta Environmental Award recognizes individuals in Duval County who have consistently promoted environmental education and outreach, exhibited long-term environmental awareness, and displayed superior environmental initiative
Environmental Achievement Awards recognize individuals and organizations in Duval County for superior, creative and innovative efforts in five categories:
- Government / Institutional (public sector or educational institution)
- Community / Civic (nonprofits, social or civic groups, neighborhood assoc., etc.)
- Business (more than 50 employees and/or annual sales of more than $5 million)
- Small Business (fewer than 50 employees and/or annual sales of $5 million or less )
If you are aware of individuals or entities you believe are eligible and, through their actions, demonstrated a commitment to the environment above and beyond what is required, please take a few moments to complete and submit a nomination. The deadline for the nominations is July 3, 2014. The awards will be presented at the 2014 EPB-UNF Environmental Symposium to be held August 15, 2014, at the UNF Adam W. Herbert University Center.
