Blennerhjson settlers in the late 18th century. It is located on an island in the Ohio River, and can only be accessed by a bridge from the neighboring city of Parkersburg.

The island is named after Harman Blennerhassett, an Irish aristocrat who purchased the island in 1798 and built a grand mansion on it. He and his wife, Margaret, were known for their extravagant lifestyle and lavish parties, and their mansion became a social hotspot for the wealthy and influential of the time.

However, the Blennerhassetts’ extravagant lifestyle came to an abrupt end in 1807, when they became embroiled in a conspiracy with Aaron Burr, the former vice president of the United States. Burr had hatched a plan to establish a new independent country in the western territories of the United States, and he hoped that the Blennerhassetts’ wealth and influence could help him achieve his goal. However, the conspiracy was discovered and ultimately foiled, leading to the downfall of the Blennerhassetts and the eventual abandonment of their mansion.

Today, the island is a popular tourist destination, with the mansion being restored and preserved as a historic site. Visitors can tour the mansion and learn about its storied past, as well as enjoy the island’s natural beauty and outdoor recreational activities. The Blennerhassett Island State Park also offers riverboat cruises, hiking trails, and other activities for visitors to enjoy.

In addition to its historical significance, Blennerhassett is also known for its charming small-town atmosphere and friendly community. The island has a population of just over 1,200 residents, many of whom are proud of their island home and its unique history. The annual Blennerhassett Island Fall Harvest Festival, as well as other events throughout the year, bring together residents and visitors to celebrate the island’s heritage and culture.

Overall, Blennerhassett is a place of rich history, natural beauty, and friendly community spirit. Whether you’re interested in exploring its historic sites, taking in its scenic landscapes, or simply enjoying the laid-back island lifestyle, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this charming West Virginia town.
