Santo Domingo Pueblo, also known as Kewa Pueblo, is a Native American pueblo located in Sandoval County, New Mexico. The pueblo is situated along the eastern bank of the Rio Grande, approximately 25 miles south of Santa Fe, making it the closest Pueblo to Albuquerque. Santo Domingo is the headquarters for the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council, and the people of the pueblo are known for their traditional arts, including pottery and jewelry making.
The history of Santo Domingo Pueblo dates back over 1,000 years, with the people believed to have descended from the Ancestral Puebloans who settled in the region around 1200 AD. The pueblo has served as an important cultural and religious center for the Keres-speaking people, and its traditional dances and ceremonies are still an integral part of the community’s identity.
The pueblo is renowned for its vibrant and colorful artwork, particularly its distinctive and highly sought-after jewelry. The Santo Domingo people are known for their skill in crafting exquisite necklaces, bracelets, and earrings using a variety of materials such as turquoise, shell, and coral. The pueblo is also famous for its pottery, which is known for its beautiful designs and intricate patterns.
In addition to its rich artistic traditions, Santo Domingo is also known for its annual feast day, held on August 4th in honor of St. Dominic, the pueblo’s patron saint. This celebration includes traditional dances, music, and a ceremonial feast, and it is an important event for the pueblo community as well as a popular attraction for visitors.
Today, Santo Domingo Pueblo is home to around 2,500 tribal members, and the pueblo operates a successful casino and resort, the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa, which has become a major economic driver for the community. Despite the challenges faced by many indigenous communities in the United States, Santo Domingo Pueblo has maintained its strong cultural heritage and continues to be a vibrant and thriving community.
